Modular Construction

 Install conventional sealant joint  Contact manufacturer with questions  Consult architect/engineer  If outside corners are to be used, move the sealant joint to one tile into tile field

FUNCTIONS: •

Bridging expansion joints

Accommodating substrate movement

• Accommodating dissimilar surface connections  Changes in plane  Dissimilar materials • Reducing/preventing sound bridging • Preventing/controlling stresses in tile assembly

LIMITATIONS: •

Solely addresses in-plane movement (floors)

• Not, generally, intended to accommodate out-of-plane movement • Cautions – refer to Profiles document (causes, cures, preventions document)

INSTALLATION: • Selection

 Select the correct PMJs for assembly  Specifier should understand the effects of warpage of tile relative to profile  Clarify acceptability with mockup of full tile assembly  Select the correct size for PMJs (height and width)  Select the correct location for PMJs • PMJs should be properly embedded with setting material above and below anchoring leg.  Do not install after tile is placed into setting material • Cleanup mortar and grout immediately during installation • Protect profiles from damage from other trades and/or cleaning methods • Addressing use of non-movement joint profiles  Accompany with PMJ with movement zone

BENEFITS: •

Minimal maintenance performance  Some profiles allow movement zones to be replaced • Protects tile edges • Addresses potential stresses in tile field • Incorporates aesthetic design function • Negates the need for second application/multi-step installation • Omits the need for sealant installation skills • Complements other finishes when used in conjunction with other profiles

CONCLUSION: Although prefabricated movement joint profiles are often overlooked, they can be an integral part of any tile assembly. It is recommended that these types of profiles are placed no more than 25 ft. (7.6 m) in any direction based on the size of the surface of an interior tile application. TCNA Handbook method EJ171 recommends that prefabricated movement joint profiles are placed at more conservative intervals when direct sunlight is anticipated; therefore, the team of installers must be adequately informed based on the specifics of the tile installation to determine where more frequent placement is necessary. Since prefabricated movement joint profiles are composed of different finishes/materials, all materials must be protected from the elements while installation is in progress. Always refer to manufacturers’ recommendations for best practice.
