Below is an example of large tile installation using the 1/2” x 1/2” trowel that does not achieve the industry minimum mortar requirements of 80% coverage in dry areas.

This tile installation does not follow tile industry standards and best practices as found in ANSI A108.5.

• The mortar coverage and transfer does not meet the required 80% in dry areas.

• The mortar shown is troweled parallel to the long side, but it should be troweled parallel to the short side of the tile to facilitate air removal and collapsed ridges.
